You probably have noticed the Evony ads flying around the internet in the past few months. This is a compilation of 10 ads, the first ad being the oldest and the last ad being the newest.

NOTE: These images are straight off lazy gamer.

It is obvious how the sexual aspect of the ads increases as times goes on.

Ad 1 --> Ad 2
They decide to use a female showing cleavage instead of a male in the ads.

Ad 2 --> Ad 3
They give the woman more cleavage and put the boobs directly in the center of the ad. On a side note, there is also actually no "queen" to rescue in the game.

Ad 3 --> Ad 4
They show even more cleavage. They also put the woman into a pose that could be seen as sexual

Ad 4 --> Ad 5
One really obvious example of "sex sells." You will notice they removed the woman's bra, (somehow) showing more cleavage.

Ad 5 --> Ad 6
The women is put in an even more sexual pose and the ad is taken like one of those Myspace pictures in which the girl "accidentally" gets a clear shot of her boobs.

Ad 6 --> Ad 7
They stop beating around the bush and go straight to partial nudity.

Ad 7 --> Ad 8
Twins make everything better.

Ad 8 --> Ad 9
... This one explains itself.

Now, lets take a look at the traffic information on Alexa.

As you can see, the experienced a huge boom in visitors until August. The amount of visitors doubled in the time period between July and August which in incidentally also the period Evony started using more racy ads. In half a year, Evony has become the 242nd most visited site in the US.

NOTE: The rapid decline in August is due to a lawsuit the creators of Evony filed against a blogger for "defamation."

MORAL OF THE STORY: sex sells on the internets because 95% internet users are male and 95% of males are horny all the time.

One last comment. Evony is actually a strategy game similar to Sid Meir's Civilization. I only figured that out after reading the Wikipedia article.

It's sad but true. And truthfully, if they made male characters as hot as female ones, I'd probably be more drawn to games too (if they were based on look).

Guess anything to try and get people interested in a shitty game. As with most things you can think of, sex does sell. Side note, the honeys in Ad 8 look familiar. Think I seen em on box cover for some porno. Stealing copyrighted material is bad.

I don't know if I'd call web traffic an indication of sex "selling". Erotic text and images certainly pique interest, but how often do men really buy from that?

Case in point, look at the porn industry. How much pornography is actually bought vs what is shared illegally? Sexual ad banners certainly drive traffic to pornographic sites, but actual sales/memberships are probably a tiny fraction of those visitors.

I suspect that after the controversy and initial fascination die down, traffic will drop accordingly.

I'll admit, though - things like pornography would often be classed as major purchases that are hard to justify. Porn videos are notoriously well known for high sticker prices.
People in states of physical and mental arousal are more likely to take risks and act impulsively - but that doesn't mean they lack boundaries or limitations entirely. The modern online game approach of micro-transactions seems like it'd be more compatible with the sexual approach.
